WintaLin Markets & Values
- The Linseed market is well established and substantial, with the EU
using 600,000 tonnes/year. Market size is not a limitation.
- Linseed markets:
Crushing Linseed oil is used in the manufacture of paints, glues, varnishes, adhesives and linoleum. Animal Feed There is increasing demand for extruded linseed in feeds to produce meat, milk and eggs with higher levels of Omega 3.(for more information see www.tradilin.co.uk) Human Consumption/ Birdseed In some seasons, nice, bright samples can command a premium for these markets. - WintaLin growers can market their crop independently or through
Premium Crops.
- Premium Crops supplies all linseed markets and is the exclusive UK
supplier to a French animal feed company based in Brittany. This company
buys over 50,000 tonnes of linseed each year for use in animal feeds.
Low levels of French production and concerns over supply and
traceability mean that we are authorised to pay UK linseed producers a
premium over the market price – we consistently pay the highest
prices available for normal quality linseed.
- WintaLin growers who choose to market their crop through Premium
Crops are offered:
- the option of fixing a forward market price (often linked to the price of oilseed rape)
- a contract that is based on normal quality standards only (so there is no quality risk to the grower)
- a range of movement options, including a harvest movement facility (and drying if required)
WintaLin Economics
WintaLin is likely to be more profitable to grow than most other combinable break crops.
The Gross Margin table below compares WintaLin to Winter Oil Seed Rape, WInter Bean and Winter Oats.
W Rape W Beans W Oats WintaLin Yield (t/ha) 3.5 4 6.8 2.75 Value (£/t) 250 130 96 288 Output (yield x price) 875 520 653 864 Protein Supplement - 38 - - Gross Output 875 558 653 864 Variable Costs (£/ha) 363 209 255 339 Gross Margin (£/ha) 512 349 398 525 Note: WintaLin costs are for a programme as laid out in the agronomy tables previously and Winter bean costs are increased to reflect extra herbicide costs
In addition to individual crop Gross Margins consider:
- Potential for more first wheats (through increasing break crops)
- Potential for improved rape yields (through extending the rotation)
- Potential reduction in cultivation costs (ideal for min-till)
- Potential reduction in overall chemical costs (good weed control, no slugs)
- Potential saving in drying costs
- 1/2 the Nitrogen requirement of Rape
- Good logistics (low volume crop for handling, storing, etc)
- Spreads the workload (spraying, harvesting)
